Please note: New archive forum for Public Space topics + Changes to forum search

Post by GeoffB » Thu Apr 28, 2016 10:01 pm

Recently the forum search engine has been crashing every few days, because the ever-increasing number of forum posts has become just too much for it to cope with. In an attempt to cure this, a large number of posts have now been archived and removed from the search index, as follows:

A new subforum called Archives of Public Space and its subforums has been set up, and all those topics in Public Space and its various subforums which have been inactive for more than a year have been moved to the new archive. In addition, some more recent topics which have run their course or are no longer useful will be moved there from time to time.

The archive is read-only, so members will not be able to reply to any topics there.

Crucially, topics in the archive will not be indexed by the forum's search engine, so will not show up in forum searches using the forum's search function.

They will, however, show up in Google searches. To restrict your Google searches to this site, please see the guide here.

We hope this change will be sufficient to keep the forum up and running smoothly for a long time to come.

Wouldn't just deleting them completely save more bandwidth than archiving them?

Tempting, but the bandwidth isn't the issue in this case, just the size of the search index. And the deletion of large numbers of posts has a potential drawback as explained in this announcement, so archiving is a better option. It also has the added advantages that members won't see a drastic reduction in their postcounts, and the archived posts will still be searchable via Google.

I think it's good to archive old items where the original contributors are no longer adding to it.

However.... it's very valuable to to have old forum posts come up via an integral search, and not have to use a google search. Is there a possibility that searching the entire forum may come back again?
Perhaps via an "advanced search" page which uses google as the basis and allows you to put in search criteria like "archived posts" or, "posts newer than two years"?

I'm afraid I don't think that's going to be an option. As far as I'm aware, the Google search that we had before wasn't particularly customizable, except to limit searches to this site, which you can do by adding "site:classicalguitardelcamp.com" onto your query in the Google search engine. You wouldn't be able to restrict the search to a particular area of the forum, or particular date ranges, so it would be all or nothing. If you use the Google page, you can refine search results to particular date ranges by clicking on the Tools button below the search box, then on the "Any time" drop down menu, then choosing a preset or customized date range.

Steven, I asked Mr. Delcamp about this and have some good news for you. He tells me that since the software update, the forum search has now been set to include the archived posts. You could even use the Advanced search (accessed from the little cogwheel icon to the far right of the search box) and select "Archives of Public Space and its subforums" from the search options if you wanted to restrict your search to that specific section.

That's great news! Thanks Geoff.

I was able to search way back, even accessing posts to 2005 in some of my searches.
