Maybe silly question about opening guitar cases

Postby LBrandt » Sat Jan 28, 2012 4:54 pm

Hello,

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I have a phobia when it comes to removing my guitars from their cases. My cases all have metal clasps on them, and when I open them to remove the guitar, the top of the case is only held back by a cloth strap. I always have this fear that as I begin to remove the guitar, the top of the case is going to fall back closed just as I'm getting the guitar out and scratch the top with those metal clasps.

Am I just being overly cautious and stupid, or do others of you have this same thought?

Nothing wrong with caution. However, I don't if I'd be overly concerned with the case top coming down on the guitar. In not saying it couldn't happen but its nothing that you should lose sleep over IMHO

I just opened my case. I never realized this before, but, the case will not stay open by itself. I hold it open with one hand and extract the guitar with the other - actually a bit awkard. Amazing what you get used to.

One of my guitars has a marked dent in it's cedar top thanks to the case falling shut as the guitar was half way out, believe me you'll only let that happen once!

I have the opposite phobia. I have to close all of the latches as soon as I put the guitar in its case.

This habit formed 20 years ago when I picked up my guitar case and my guitar fell onto the tiled floor because I'd left it unfastened.

Ouch! :chaud:

That happened to me with a guitar that I had borrowed from a friend to play a recital. The repair bill was almost twice what I got paid for the recital!

My phobia is breaking or chipping a nail when the case doesn't open easily. However, I love the case that came with my Sergio Abreu guitar. It was made by a Brazilian case maker and has a little ridge sticking out that allows you to open it without risking nail damage. :D

It has happened to me before and it's not a good feeling.

Read somewhere that most guitars sustain damage while going in or out of the case. I always hold the lid with one hand, guitar with the other.

Hi LBrandt,

I would find the best way for YOU to do this and then do it the same way all the time. In other words... develop a good habit!

For instance... I always...ALWAYS... lock one latch of my case when my guitar is in use.

you can always remove the screws on every latch before you open the case. if all the latches are removed there will be no chance of damage. Mine are rivited so I can't do that.

Are you the only one who has access to your guitars? It happened to one of mine. Someone else in the house opened the case of one of my guitars, the top closed while the guitar was still halfway out. Nasty surprise when I opened the case.

Not a silly question at all. This happened to me, too. I was horrified at the mark it left on the top of my guitar (luckily just in the finish). But, what can you do once it's been done? Be sure that it never happens again, that's what! They should make the latches so that when the case is open, it is smooth along the edge of the lid, rather than having those evil metal bits sticking out to take a bite out of our beautiful guitars.

Someone needs to come out with a case with this option;
