Yes it is a beautiful piece, and one of the first I studied with my former teacher. When I learned it, I wasn't too advanced either. I find it pretty straightforward and not too difficult. I say give it a try and you might be surprised!

I haven't looked at it in a while, but there is a Sonatine on Japanese themes by Siegfried Behrend that I think uses the Sakura theme for at least one of the movements and is not as advanced as the Yocoh version.
