Closing or locking the thread is unnecessary. If one does not wish to read the contents, one is not obligated to click on the thread. If the thread became overheated or posts deteriorated into name calling and incivility, then the thread would be locked. Any thread that is not interesting to the forum membership will die on its own from lack of interest.

There's a concurrent thread on “Segovia Criticism” that after starting off hot with 21 entries on April 13, has had only 3 entries since April 14. Did those guys see that more blood was being spilled over here and wanted to get in on the action?

Or maybe there is relationship to a mental ailment manifesting itself similar to "transfered agression" where an ostensibly innocent scapegoat is chosen to vent frustation on because of some personal goal that cannot be achieved,commonly known as" jealousy".Maybe a new traite called "Segophobia" or something like that.
