Is it spruce or is it cedar? #X

Postby Steve Ganz » Mon Apr 16, 2012 5:29 pm

Pursuant to the thread
http://www.classicalguitardelcamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=67619
and others in the series, I offer this recording, which just came to me yesterday from a student, recording for a scholarship application:
See the Nocturne on my site (under the Music heading).

The back and sides are EIR. It was recorded to a computer with a Shure SM57. No reverb or other sound effects have been added.
The playing is quite musical. Enjoy!

Steve, thanks for posting this beautiful music ...

Having started this game I should take part from this side, too.
I'm not familiar with many other guitars apart from those I'm playing, but I'll take the risk of guessing: I'd say it is a lattice braced spruce top (???).

best wishes
Robert

For me it sounds like spruce.

The student deserves the scholarship. Maybe spruce, but again, could be cedar.

SPOILER:

Spruce it is! My congratulations...You guys are good. That piece had the melody in the bass strings (and the basses sounded profound) and the tone didn't vary much, so I don't think the 'spruciness' was NOT as obvious as is sometimes the case.
Cheers to all

Not that part....The guitar is based on a 7 fan bar, closely following the Hauser 1937 plan. The spruce is Engelmann.

I wonder if there was some quality of the sound that influenced that part of the guess...?
Not enough reverb? (smile and wink)

I can't say; it's something in the tonal characteristic that I associate with it. Certainly not the lack of reverb :-)

I am very interested in the human process of listening and then correlating to causal factors....Thanks
