good guitar quotes

Postby Pulgar » Wed Apr 25, 2012 2:19 pm

The following quote appears as a tagline quote in messages here in Delcamp forums. It would be nice to share it, but before doing so I would like to include the origin. So, if anyone knows who said it , please pass it on.

"Finally have my priorities straight! First time I've owned a guitar worth more than my car..."
-James-

Please share some of the other classical guitar quotes you have run across!

Are you sure this quote wasn't about the violin?

Does this tell us more about his guitar or his car?

I only heard it about the guitar, though quotes like this frequently get attributed in other ways.

But my favorite quote came from I believe eighteenth century guitarists, who only had gut strings available to them. They were constantly breaking and also would never stay in tune. So the saying among guitarists of the gut string era was:

"If a guitarist lives to one hundred, he has spent forty years changing strings, another forty just tuning up, and twenty actually playing." :D

Pulgar: That would be me :D
And jnb: I suppose it tells a little about both but more about my priorities ;-)

Guitar is nothing very special. Jose Ramirez estudio 3e from 92 (year before they restructured the company for larger distribution) but I wouldn't trade it for any of the new 4e I've played.
Car is a 2001 Saturn.

One of my favorite quotes about the guitar was a French quote from the turn of the century (the last one) that reflected the attitude toward the guitar as a respectable instrument in the elitist classical circles. It went something like, 'the guitar is an instrument for the spanish monkey' (I can't remember who had said it). And while it was meant to be insulting, it's a reminder at just how wrong critics can be. And shoot, if a monkey can learn to play it I shouldn't have too much trouble.

Another one I read somewhere on a HIWATT site: (It can be easily adapted)
"If you're lucky enough to own a vintage HIWATT, you're lucky enough..." ("If you're lucky enough to own a vintage Houser...)

"Do or DO NOT; there is no TRY" -Scott Tennant quoting Yoda in Pumping Nylon and most of the other quotes in that book (although not directly attributed to the guitar)
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Among God's creatures two, the dog and the guitar, have taken all the sizes and all the shapes, in order not to be separated from man.

Also from Scott Tennant's Pumping Nylon, in his preface to the section with Giuliani's 120 right-hand studies:

...listening to a V-I cadence (the C to G7 chords) over a prolonged period is "cruel and unusual punishment".

Not for the guitar but from a guitarist (and just a general comment):

"If there's one thing I've learned it's that Life is for the strong-minded"

I seem to remember a quote from Segovia to the effort of "I've had several wives and several guitars...I still have the guitars".

Considering, until I met my wife, I refused to pay more than $500.00 for any car...it doesn't say much for the quality of the guitars I've owned. $501.00 doesn't usually buy much of a guitar but you can get some pretty stylin' cars!

Not so much a guitar quote as it came from an album title, but my favorite is:

"Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar" - Frank Zappa

Seems to me like that is good advice...I think I'll take it right now.

An interesting quote, given Segovia's reputed disdain for any but classical music on a classical guitar.

not really, there is world of difference between 'the guitar' & 'the classical guitar' ..to stay on topic can you provide a quote of what he actually said on the matter?
