Can anybody recommend an excellent - in terms of quality of the recording, interpretion and ability of the guitarist - currently available recording of Llobet's 'Variation on a theme by Sor' please?

Google up "Leif Christensen Llobet". Several on-line retailers have his 1982 recording, and it's a knockout.

Second choice is a double-CD titled "Respuesta", by Stefano Grondona, who plays all these works on a 1887 Torres guitar. I place this second only because it's a double-album and therefore higher cost to obtain one particular selection.

There is a Naxos 2004 release by Lorenzo Micheli that sounds pretty good to me.

I'd also point out that the double album Respuesta by Stefano Grondona doesn't actually contain any of the Variations on a Theme by Sor...at least the version that is available in the UK doesn't.

Thanks to David Norton and NylonStrung.
Would welcome your opinion of Kyuhee Park's interpretation on Youtube.

That's odd about the Grondona disc. I am listening to it right now, it is on CD 1 track 2. Is yours the same, Stradivarius label STR 33770, brown-crimson-orange box?

My mistake, I apologise. You're quite right, it is track 2 on CD 1. I was thrown by the fact that, on the Naxos CD I mentioned, the variations are split into 11 separate tracks.

Another good performance is by Anabel Montesinos on her Naxos CD 'Guitar Recital' (2003)

Very 'modern' sound (Marty guitar) of Montesinos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1E2G48-c6k
Also see Thomas Viloteau ( Smallman guitar) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBIOu9qqxeI

Interesting to contrast with the Kyuhee Park version.( Daniel Friedrich 2009 guitar) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oba_NWowuXU

I just discovered this fabulous guitarist. She has not been mentioned very much before. Nice to see her name surfacing more often.

Jut took delivery of her latest CD ' Sonata Noir' . Contains 3 pieces by Llobet ; Variations on a theme by Sor, Leonesa and Scherzo-vals, a sonata by Brouwer, Sonata Op. 42 by Miklos Rozsa and Sonatina op.52-1 by Berkeley. A very interesting programme, very well-played.
Had to send to Amazon Japan for it (not available in the normal places in Britain), so turned out expensive with delivery duty and VAT. Do not regeret it though. Downside , with the exception of the last page the booklet is all in Japanese.
