Strung up the Lacote yesterday to do a final bit of soundboard tuning before finishing...and took a few photos for posterity.

I have to admit...that figure 8 shape headstock is starting to grow on me. What ya gonna do with that cute little hole at the top?
My living room is littered with a dozen Ingram guitars.

You've seen the photos of Tarrega sticking his smoke between the strings at the machine head...? Well, this way there is a designated place for your smoke...it's small so you can put the pointy end of your roll-your-owns...

Actually, many 19th century guitars had a hole through the upper peghead (especially those with pegs and figure eight head but they are also found on many of the straight sided pegheads too) for either a ribbon to hang it against the wall or for a strap. They seem to have been phased out with the advent of mechanical tuners and slotted heads. But endpins were common well into the 20th century on gut/nylon string guitars other than the Spanish style.

Thanks senunkan. I'm working on the sound clips for these guitars. I was going to do them myself but never seem to find the time before the instrument is gone. Might have to hire someone to do it for me.

Yes, those little planes are my favorites. I like that I can take the little finger stick (not sure what that piece is called) out when needed and put it back when needed. And that they work equally well pushing and pulling...fantastic design. I have another one handmade by an asian fellow and sold on fleabay that I just love. It's almost square in design and can take a shaving thinner than tissue paper. Amazing tool!

I've got a nice red ribbon through two of those little holes in the top of my friction peg headed SE117. I don't use it to hang on the wall, but I just love the old time feel of it. How do you do it with just one hole?

Usually the ribbon or chord is double, attached to a braided or fabric strap, one end is put through the hole and then a knot is tied with the other end.

I swiped the photo from: http://www.schossig-lautenbau.de/home_e.html Look under "Accessories". If you're looking for a lute or Baroque guitar he makes great ones....gave him a plug so he'll forgive my photo theft....straps are very nice too.

I play 19th century guitar with a strap but I usually tie on around the figure eight peghead at the narrow point between pegs 2 and 5. I don't find the hole in the peghead all that convienient but many do. I always put the hole in the peghead if it was there in the original, even if the player doesn't use a strap. It's a conversation opener if nothing else.
