Hello,

this is my transkription of the piece Bourée Posato a minor (WeissSW 42.3) from Silvius Leopold Weiss. It is located in the Dresdner Manskript and it's one of my favourite pieces, even if I am not able to play it correctly :D .

Nicely done :)
What does the numbering WeissSW 42.3 signify? I haven’t come across an agreed numbering system for Weiss’s works; it would be useful if there is one.

I use the numbering and the catalog from the website http://www.slweiss.com/. There you can find an article about the WeissSW numbering http://www.slweiss.de/index.php?id=3&ty ... o&lang=eng. It was just the most complete I found and since then I am using it :)

Thanks for pointing that out; an agreed numbering scheme makes it a lot easier to know which piece is being referred to. With Weiss this has been a particular problem because the numbering of his suites has been very variable. It would be great of performers started using the scheme!

Thanks, Michael. An interesting piece - looks easy but is in fact quite tricky to play. Worth the effort, though, I think.

Hello Fabbri,

I agree, it looks easier than it is to play :-)

Here you can find a version played on the lute:

Youtube

and here is one played on a guitar:

I suppose I need more time to practise.

Greetings,
Michael

Thanks for the two videos. They are inspiring (and perhaps a little intimidating, too).

Sorry, I didn't want to intimidate anybody with the videos. I just wanted to give an impression of how it could sound. Also, I think the Bourrée sounds great (or even better?) when played in a much slower tempo. I must know that :D.

Thanks Michael,

S.L. Weiss is one of my favourite barock composers. The bourrée you transcribed is a wonderful piece. Not easy, but worth trying. And you played it very well. Also helpful to have a tablature attached to it. Which programme did you use for your transcription (standard + tablature) ?

kind regards,
Ben

Hello Ben,

unfortunately I am not the player in one of the youtube videos :-(. They just should give an impression, what the piece sounds like.

I use lilypond for all my transkriptions, because i like the printed result. It's very readable, even under difficult circumstances. But this is only my personal opinion.

To have a tablature attached or not, seems to be a very personal descision. For me, I think it's a very clever team work between the advantages of modern notation and the old lute tablatures.

Kind regards,
Michael

Michael, many thanks for the transcription. I've only just discovered this magnificent piece. The wonderful thing about Weiss is that because so many of his works have survived, there are always new pieces for me to listen to.

Is anyone else having a problem opening the NT.pdf file? It downloads ok, but opens in my copy of Acrobat with an error message. Only the tails of the notes are showing, and measures 18-28 are missing. In my other pdf reader it won't open at all.

some queries -

measure 42: should the second note be D#? (not D)
measure 54: should the G on the 6th string be G#?
measure 55: should the C on the 5th string be C#?
measure 70: should the F# on the first string be F?
