Hello from South Louisiana, USA

Post by Timothy Morgan » Thu Sep 07, 2017 7:45 pm

Hello,

I am a born again guitarist here in Cajun Country (Lafayette, Louisiana). It has been roughly 15 years since I put my guitars to rest due to hand issues and life. Two weeks ago I decided to restring my guitar and give it another whirl. All of my books were still in usable condition and my wife was pleased with the decision.
Mainly self taught using the Noad books so I dusted that one (Solo Guitar Playing Book 1) off to reacquaint myself with reading music (not going as smoothly as I would like). I am amazed at the number of videos available on YouTube. Uros Baric, Bradford Werner, Ben Woods and many others are my favorites at the moment and I am thankful at how freely they share their knowledge.
When I was younger I started with an electric guitar but I didn't enjoy it that much and gravitated to an old 1970's Japanese Epiphone that my mother purchased for herself. It didn't take long for me to get into an attempt at classical guitar. I tried a few entry level instruments and was lucky enough to be married to a pianist who teaches children's lessons. She introduced me to sight reading even though I am not a good student.
My musical tastes are eclectic but I always gravitate to Celtic, Cajun and Classical.

Basically I am starting anew and full of fire for it once again. I believe I will purchase a new instrument in the next few months if I can keep the love alive to augment my 25 year old plywood Alvarez. Truly I don't deserve it at the moment, my dexterity is lacking but I can still hear the difference in the notes.

Thanks

Tim

Hello Tim,
I hope all is well with you and your family down there in Lafayette and that Harvey was not much trouble for you. I'm from down around there, well east, in that less cultured part of Louisiana that is New Orleans. I migrated out of there 13 years ago to Mississippi and consider myself a native as I was born on the Delta (east bank). My interests are about the same as yours, I've followed a similar path and rebooted on guitar a few years back. Got the bad hands and all that aging too. I love this site and the lessons and discussion groups here are the best. I've followed a few threads into Japanese classical guitars and now have 2 of 'em but am only just now beginning the lessons at the D01 level. I'll post my first lesson result in a week or so. You should come over to the learning thread and consider joining. It started up on the 6th so it's not too late. See ya.

Hello James,

Thank you for your message, we were not really affected by Harvey like those poor people to our West. They will, as our fellow citizens in Florida, face huge trials in the near future.
I am following some threads and just trying to absorb a little on this forum. Your idea concerning the learning thread appeals to me, I will head over there immediately following the submit button.

Thanks
Tim

Welcome,
My family and I was out your way last March (Vacherie) on vacation. We had a wonderful time, great people. My wife and I hope to get back to NOLA in a few weeks.
