On the trill question, it is difficult to see on the video, but I believe M. Delcamp is playing E-D-E-D on the fourth string (so he is starting the trill on the note above the one marked, as used to be the practice before the classical period). This might often be played with a single finger (1010 or 2020) but M. Delcamp usually prefers to alternate fingers, as he finds this can lead to a faster and more efficient trill.

Have a look at his post here and scroll down to the section that begins "We come to the exercise that prepares us to play trills" (exercise 10 onwards). Have a look also at his later post in that thread here, scrolling down to the trills.

Hello everyone, I’m afraid I’ve got a bit behind with the playing and with providing feedback in this forum, although the latter is partly a result of having so many fellow students on the course, which is of course great!
To Ned, Jack, Goran, Giuseppe, Stephan, Coen, Michael and Richard..... :bravo:

Ned – I was surprised to see the comments on your RH position. I’ve always seen it as ‘classically’ perfect. Perhaps you could make some subtle changes to how you pluck the strings, record/video some exercises and then carefully listen to the tonal quality to see if it makes a difference?

Jack – good to see you again, albeit in shorts! My wife sometimes jokes that I am being tricked into some elaborate Internet grooming scam. At first glance, your posts could be evidence of that! Very nice playing at the tempo, although along with Goran’s fast Schiarazula, I did notice that the timing went very slightly on the semi-quavers.

Giuseppe – really enjoyed your Galliard and watching how you seemed to be playing the music inside your head. My face tends to show either moderate tension, extreme tension, or disappointment at the wrong notes!

Stephan and Coen – very clean and confident posts that were a pleasure to listen to.

Michael – congratulations on your new arrival, and you still find time to record and upload some wonderful recordings!

Richard – well done to record some new versions. It must have been quite hard to re-learn the Schiarazula, but you play it very well.

I might try to redo my arpeggi, otherwise I’m just waiting for lesson 2 and resolving (yet again!) that this time I’ll stick to the suggested practice schedule!

Still a few mistakes...and I totally altered a turnaround. Oh well, it's the zero hour since our next lesson is tomorrow I believe. This'll have to do!!

Hi Mark - Very well played - I noticed the altered turnaround but I'm sure an audience wouldn't have, you look very relaxed throughout.

I've decided to upload some recordings of the arpeggios at the following tempi:

3 note arpeggio @ 96bpm (about as fast as I find comfortable)
3 note arpeggio @ 112bpm (as indicated on the score, too fast for my technique)
4 note arpeggio @ 72bpm (just about OK)
4 note arpeggio @ 84bpm (as indicated on the score, too fast for me!)

I'm not sure what any of this proves - apart from showing that I haven't practiced these arpeggios enough over the past few weeks!
(and that I still need to stop my LH thumb from creeping round! :oops:

I thought it sounded great. Yes, you are pushing yourself a little too hard on the faster tempo but your are not far off, precision was only just out of your grasp and no doubt will come.
At the gentler tempo I particularly enjoyed the steadiness of your arpeggios or arpeggi or whatever they may correctly be called....a regular balanced tempo and balanced emphasis between the a, m and i fingers which allows the clarity of the underlying chords and music to stand out.
For what it is worth, I am trying when I remember to slow it down a bit and not push too hard because I notice, more than tempo, when I watch a performance it is the steadiness and calm of the performer that impresses itself on me. And it is more enjoyable to watch someone with poise going steadily than someone off balance and rushing headlong.....
which is of course not to say there is anything wrong with stretching yourself, I often do that too and I suspect at times it is helpful....
anyway keep it up!

A belated attempt at the Gaillarde. I have been finding it a challenge to get a feel for the tempo of 3/8 but wanted to have a go, having appreciated the efforts of Michael and Guiseppe (more polished than mine I may say!)

I have only one complaint, too much sticking your left thumb over the neck of the guitar and in this position restrict the movements of other fingers of the left hand.

Goran - you are right, I keep talking to my left thumb but it is not listening to me! :oops:

It is difficult to break old habits but I am trying...slowly!
