High E keeps slipping off bridge

Postby shawmutt » Tue May 15, 2012 10:49 pm

This is my third or fourth restring, and I thought I had it down, but apparently I don't. I have all the other strings on, and they went on fine. My high E will not stay in place. I'm using Savarez Standard tension. This happened the last time too, but it let go when it was nearly in tune and damaged my soundboard when it snapped. I wound up using a cheaper high E, I wasn't going to spend another $20 on Savarez.

This time I was really careful when tuning it up. I get to about G3 and then it slips at the bridge. I've taken the string down and tried to reinstall multiple times but can't seem to get it right. Help!

Hi shawmutt,

Sorry to hear about your soundboard. :(

There are a couple of things you could try. I'm assuming you are double winding it, but you might try triple winding.

When I tie strings at the bridge, they all have their ends pointing in the same direction - towards the floor when you're holding the guitar. If you do it that way too, you could try wrapping the E string in the other direction. Put the E string on first, leaving about an inch left over. Then, put on the B string and wrap it over the end of the E string. That should hold it.

Another trick is to take a lighter to the end of the string and melt a little ball on the tip.

I usually just leave LOTS of extra string hanging out for all of the trebles. Like 2 or 3 inches. After they've set for a day or two, I clip them off.

Hope that helps!

Alan

I found the Savarez fluorocarbon to be thin and slippery. I've had the high E unwind and snap too often, finally dinging my sound board. I've since switched to the thicker Savarez nylon version, with no issues so far. In fact the nylon version feels and sounds better IMO.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I now also always melt the end of all three treble strings in to a ball. It's cheap insurance.

OK, the triple wind seemed to do the trick, thanks! Sometimes a person just needs a couple more brains in the mix to come up with a simple solution

I did look at the melting trick, and the different wrapping techniques. I'll have to give them a shot.
