Intermediate guitar duet suggestions

Post by Adrian Allan » Sat Jul 16, 2016 6:56 pm

I have a grade 6 pupil who is preparing for a GCSE exam (UK exam for 16 year olds)

He needs to do a guitar duet, where his part is not too hard (ie not as hard as an actual grade 6 piece that will take a few months to learn properly), so probably about grade 4-5.

The teacher part can be harder, of course.

Has anybody got any suggestions, either online or sheet music to purchase?

There's quite a lot of English renaissance music that comes into that category. Johnson's Flatt Pavan, La Rossignol, Robinson's Toy for two lutes for example. I think the first two are in the Noad Renaissance Guitar collection and the Toy can be found free online. I could also mention my website (Guitar Loot) as I have posted some duets originally written for lute and a few that are originally lyra viol pieces. All of them come in the 'not too difficult' category.

There is Milonga by Jorge Cardosa. Maybe grade 5-ish. Very nice piece.

I have a version of Vivaldi concerto in D major for guitar and orchestra. The orchestra part is reduced for a second guitar. Very nice piece. I'll find the transcription for you if you're interested. I'm in the process of working through both parts. We could do some online collaboration if you'd like as well. I'm not sure of the grade but the second guitar part is quite nice and a bit easier than the main guitar part, which is pretty much the dsame as the standard score for the normal concerto.

Yes, that would be great.

It only has to be a shortish piece, though about 3 to 5 minutes, but an extract from a concerto could be used up to a cadence.

Might be the right level - I would say the student part has to be no harder than something like Lagrima, though

Morenita do Brasil by Ferrauto is about the right level and great fun. If you don't know it there are plenty of versions on YouTube.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far - I have already looked into most of them, and will make a decision before long.

Have you considered Fernando Sor's "L'Encouragement, Op.34 I: Cantabile"?
Then, how about Milan Tesar's "Suita Karussel: II. Aria"?

They are both slow and very beautiful duets. :casque:

Good luck

All the others from that Opus are well worth a look, most are a bit easier than the G major.

The Heinrich Albert guitar duos are absolutely superb and range in difficulty
