Prosthetic fingertips

Post by no disclaimer » Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:08 pm

In a accident with a router table my left index finger came into contact with a three quarter inch round over bit and the results weren't pretty. I lost part of the bone at the tip so they had to remove the nail bed and fold the skin to make a pad. The end of my finger looks like a marble and causes a lot of adjacent sting buzz problems. I was wondering if anyone that has a similar amputation has tried any of the prosthetic fingertips on the market or the one that is found at galaxy guitars.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I don't have any personal knowledge regarding the fingerboard hand but you might want to contact Phil DeFremery (http://www.phillipdefremery.com/). He is a very fine guitarist who plays with a prosthetic device on his plucking hand. He may be able to guide you.

The best company I found for my 2 finger injuries is Galaxy Guitar Products. They have a finger Prosthetic called The Galaxy FT-1 Ultra-Flex Finger Protector. It allows me to still do complex chord positioning & Play leads. Without the FT-1 I am not able to play my guitars. Here is a link, I hope this may helps assist you. ***commercial link removed*** click on Finger Protector. Best Of Luck.

One of the finest Jazz guitarists Django Reinhardt, burned his hand badly in a fire so he basically played with just 2 fingers of of his fret hand, and with just 2 fingers played some just awesome stuff.

Tony Iommi cut the tips off his and made finger tips so he could play.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune, maybe you can find something that works for you or see a specialist on the matter.

I saw Phillip DeFremery play many years ago and he played very well with his prosthetic finger, you couldn't tell unless you looked closely. The prosthetic was whiter than the other fingers. Has anybody used prosthetics on their fretting hand? I was wondering if a prosthetic could be used as an extension for a short natural finger (pinky in my case).
