Bach, J. S.; BWV 0996 Prelude, Presto - D10

Postby James Lister » Mon May 30, 2011 11:15 am

Finally got around to recording the Prelude and Presto. I've been practicing this quite a lot, as I performed it in front of a small audience a few weeks ago. I decided to be a bit less fussy than usual about getting that "perfect" take - just did 3 takes, and a few small edits. Recorded using my Behringer C-2 mics and 4-channel mixer into Audacity, with reverb by Gverb. Put a bit more reverb than I usually do - really like the large church effect for Bach.
Guitar is one of my own, of course, with spruce top, and indian rosewood back and sides.

I'm still working on the Courante, then just the Gigue to go to complete the suite.

All comments gratefully accepted!

James

Nicely done James! Lovely sound to the guitar too. Nice tone and balance, I like it.

I played that Bach Suite for my graduation recital from university. It's always been one of my most favorite Bach pieces. I'm glad you posted it for us.

Good job, James! :bravo:

You captured the drama of the prelude and brought out the voices in the presto beautifully!

I hardly noticed any reverb, so I certainly don't think it's overdone.

Looking forward to hearing the rest of the suite.

Many thanks Bert, VeganPicker, Scot, Erik, Vesuvio and Alan for your comments - they are very much appreciated (as is any constructive critisism :) ).

In case anyone's interested, here are links to the other parts of the suite I've recorded so far:

Thanks Kay and Cary. :merci:

Kay - this is the guitar I'm currently using as my main instrument, and I've had it for about 9 months now I think. From time to time someone tries my personal guitar and likes it enough that they want to buy that particular instrument - then I just have to make myself another one!

Kay

I have not played it, but I have seen James's guitar a couple of months back and I can vouch for it being absolutely gorgeous in looks and tone, presuming it is the same spruce/brazilian instrument. The Brazilian rosewood is a wonderful deep colour, almost black. And James plays it pretty well too.

Thanks George,

Actually it's not the Brazilian rosewood guitar on the recording - I'd taken that one to Linlithgow because I wanted to show it to Allan. My own guitar is a more modest Indian rosewood instrument - still a very nice guitar, but not as strong as the Brazilian. I've just posted some photos of the Brazilian rosewood guitar on my self promotion page.
