Sad news about Alan "Tarbaby"

Post by GeoffB » Wed May 18, 2016 3:45 pm

It is with great sadness that the moderators have to pass on the news that our friend and colleague Alan, alias Tarbaby, passed away suddenly earlier this month.

Alan had been a forum member for 10 years and a moderator for the last 7 years, and was loved and respected by all of us for his kind, unassuming and supportive nature. His loss will be deeply felt, both within the moderator team and no doubt on the wider forum.

Alan had a great sense of humor. I know because he responded to my foolishness quite often!
It will be good to visit old posts with his comments. To classical guitar heaven my friend.

Alan was a kind and gentle man. He was my anchor when I became a Mod. Signing in in the mornings I was often greeted by Alan as he thought of going to bed - it was a little brightness to start the day. He had lots of stories about his vast musical experience, telling them to illustrate a point, as if they were banal (which they were usually not). He had not been around recently, and I missed him. It is so sad that he is gone.

Alan always gave encouragement to newbies to record, to explore and always helped in the kindest way possible. I would have never posted a recording on the forum but for his encouragement. He was a gentle, kind person.
We were able to talk by Skype a few times when I was recovering from surgery and I am glad I had the opportunity to talk with him in real time and not just in text form.
I will miss him greatly and hope that he truly rests in peace.

My deepest extended sympathies to his family and his friends....and also to a wonderful, special person who brightened his day with her conversations and presence.
When the sun shines, bask.
Classical Guitar forever!

My wife and I met up with Alan once while passing through Portland and had an enjoyable visit. He and I played through some simple duets (he was a much more advanced player than me), and we had a fun talk over dinner. Music was his life. He had a couple of regular gigs at the time. He was of great help and support not only to the membership but to new moderators as well. A good friend, a good man, a fine musician, and a true asset to this forum. We will miss him here.

Amen, Oski. Such dreadfully sad news. Alan was always so kind to everyone and so helpful...and so talented. His recording of Abreu`s Amando Sobre O Mar shows such musical sensitivity and was always one of my favourites. I`m sure he touched many people with his music and his generous nature. RIP Alan. You will be much missed.
