Jorge Morel (1931-2021)

Post by LynnComrie »

I've just read news of the passing of Argentinian guitarist/composer Jorge Morel (Rafael Aguirre's FB posting today). Very sad that another familiar name has gone.

Hearing Morel's "Bossa en Re", being played by my friend's guitar teacher back in the day is what got me into classical guitar.

Thank you for all your work and inspiration Jorge!

Very sad news. He was one of the greats. I remember my first teacher playing the Danza Brasileira for me which just blew me away.

Very sad news. I remember seeing him perform at the Wigmore Hall.A fine guitarist who gave a very entertaining performance.
I shall take a look at his Danza Brasiliera tonight.

I’d put him up there with Barrios, truly a great loss for the guitar world.

Sad news indeed, I saw him perform in Edinburgh in the 1980s and then bought the sheet music for his "Latin Impressions" which he signed for me. I thought he was an inspirational musician and loved his interpretation of Barrios and Villa Lobos. I never quite mastered the Latin Impressions though

RIP, he lived a long musical live with a great legacy. Great player. Long fingers, fast and smooth playing, lived and breathed the lovely music of his country and continent.

Sad news...
I announced his loss to my teacher yesterday and he was very sad to hear it. He told me that at early 90's he had several lessons with J.Morel and knew him in person. At the end of the lesson he gave me a copy of a manuscript transcription of his! I was delighted! The piece is the well-known ''Take five'' by D.Brubeck. I'll upload a recording when it's ready...
