Coleridge-Taylor, Samuel - op.38 3 Silhouettes : I Tambourine - Video

Post by Aitua » Tue Dec 18, 2018 3:07 pm

Hello !

Here is a work of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875 - 1912). He wrote a lot of pieces for piano, chamber music, and orchestra.
He did not write for guitar, by consequent I decided to arrange a music initially written for piano :
3 Silhouettes : I Tambourine

That was my first arrangement for single guitar and... it was difficult for me ! However I enjoyed doing this and hope I will be able to do that again.

I discovered African Descent classical composers only this year and I feel they deserved to be known. I hope, with my performance, that you feel the same ! ha ha ha !

Thanks for that great playing and transcription! Impressive for sure. And yes, I'd like to hear more from Coleridge and others of African descent. No doubt they'll enrich the repertoire.

How'd you get so good so young?

Thank you for your comment !

I'm not as young as you may think... but I want to keep that mystery ha ha :D

Unfortunately I did not find any guitar score, so I decided to transcribe as much as I can from these composers, such as Coleridge-Taylor, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, Ignatus Sancho...
I'll start for guitar quartet, and then solo guitar :chaud:

That was really nice, thanks for sharing. :D
Just been reading SCT's bio on wiki, what an amazing life that was! I suspect he's become largely forgotten in the UK and anything that redresses that has got to be a good thing. Well done!

Wonderful! Full marks to you, sir, for the transcription, playing, and great video. You are doing important work here, so keep at it. This one really sounds suited to the guitar. Great to hear a new voice in the guitar world. Encore!

Sounded great. It must feel gratifying to make that work on the guitar.

I loved this video! Really nice playing and arrangement. First I’ve heard of this composer. Thx for raising my awareness. I had to look at wiki too as I was thinking of the earlier Coleridge, the poet.
In this lovely music in the video I was thinking of Joplin. Anyone else hear ragtime here? Sort of?

Thx again for posting, really great.

Hey! Thank you for all your message! :D
I'm really glad that some of you looked to the composer's biography. I really feel that he should be known. Because as StuMayes said, like most of black composer before the 20th century, they were forgotten in the history. There will be another composer I'm going to show you soon!! :D

Actually, I made a small video in order to talk about this composer, and there are english subtitles (I don't know if this is the good place to post it or if I should put in the Public Space ?)

Daamn!!! I forgot to talk about his mother who name him based on the poet!
Alice Hare Martin name her son based on the name of a poet, who at his turn name her grand son based on a character of a poem...
This is a really geek family 8)
