550.00 for an Esteve 1GR08 fair?

Post by RobertPavich » Tue Feb 22, 2011 6:29 pm

I have my eye on an Esteve 1GR08 from 2009 and I'm willing to pay 550.00 for it...does that sound fair?
It's got a few little light dings as is normal for a guitar this age..

What do you think?

For a 12 year old but all-solid guitar, 30% of the street price would be fair to me...given a fair amount of wear and tear :bye:

Hi Robert,

Having owned several Esteve guitars over the years, including a GR08 I and two GR9Cs - I can honestly say I doubt you will find a better guitar for the money, particularly if the guitar is in good shape and you like the way it plays and sounds.

The GR08 is all solid woods, and is a very solid performer.

Let us know what you decide...

Just to clarify....
This guitar is in good shape but ITS FROM 1998....does that change the advice for the better or the worse?

The GR08 that I had (and dearly loved) was a '97.

I know that at that time, the GR08 was a part of Esteve's artisan class of guitars - meaning hand made by a small group of luthiers instead of mass produced.

If I had $550 I would buy it without a second thought.

My experience with Esteve guitars is that they are typically superior in sound and build quality to other comparably priced Spanish guitars like Cordoba, Rodriguez, etc. They are not mass produced/distributed the same - if you Google Esteve you will find Ron Hernandez who is the sole importer and distributor of Esteve guitars in the US. Ron is a good guy and personally sets up every Esteve he imports.

I think I saw in another post that you are playing an Alhambra 1C? The GR08 is a huge step up in volume, tone, etc.

I don't think you will be dissapponted.

Steve,
Yes...I'm playing a 1C but stumbled on this Esteve (my "near future dream guitar") and decided that I wasn't likely to see one for this price very often....so I'd go for it.
Thanks for your advice...now only one thing left...to actually purchase it :)
