about soundhole carvings ....

Well, I am a huge fan of those beautiful lutes' soundhole-carvings! Only on guitars I have not seen them so frequently but only one or two times....

So, luthiers and others, why isn't it popular anymore to decorate guitars' soundholes with beautiful carvings? Is it for acustical or mechanical reasons? Could I go to a luthier and order a carved soundhole for a handmade guitar? What would be the drawbacks of such soundholes?

Would be quite interesting for me to get opinions on that!

(PS: I am going to have a short vacation for the next couple of days so I can't reply to this thread immediately)

I knew I'd seen these somewhere:

So far as I know they are just cosmetic and have no effect on sound. Best wishes, V.
