A Japanese influence

Post by James Frieson » Mon May 14, 2018 5:20 am

Making elements of a new rosette design .
The veneers are Holly and Brasilian rosewood .
I cut the holly veneer with a Japanese hand plane . I cut the Brasilian with a Japanese mechanical plane ,
a machine with a stationary knife and a moving bed . Both were cut at 0.5 mm . I cut some of the holly at 0.8 mm .
It is not perfect veneer ; in professional cutting of veneer with a knife , something called a nose bar is used , which helps reduce tearout a great deal . No such device used here . But for my purpose here , it works fine , and the thickness is even .
The Japanese plane has a thick heavy blade of laminated steel , soft steel to take the shock of work , carbon steel with a hard temper to do the work .

Nice. I've got one like that made of concentric circles. I think this kind of thing is a good direction. It's not Spanish, but it blends well into Spanish style work in the hand of someone like you.
Patience at the bending iron pays in rounded dividends!

Nice! Mind if I rip you off?

I don't plan to copy your pattern, but also look into Japanese motifs for rosettes.
