Dowland, John - Lachrimae Pavan - Video

Post by Rob MacKillop » Tue Oct 27, 2009 6:31 pm

Not my best performance ever, but I quite like the accidental darkness - don't know what happened to the camera - very dark, but quite suitable for the piece perhaps.

The guitar is a Baby Rodriguez, 60cms string length, strung with Gut and Silk Strings by Aquila. Hope you like it...

Excellent music and playing. I play "flow my tears" with my favourite singer, it's pretty much the same music .

That's right - in Am, if I remember correctly. Dowland also used it along with a group of viols, and there it is also in Am. There is great debate about which came first, with the solo in Gm being the front runner...

Good morning Rob,

You get a wonderful tone out of those Aquila strings! Thank you very much for the recording,

Best wishes, V :D

Thank you, Rob, that was just beautiful, and the warm, soft tone of the strings sounded perfect for the piece.

:merci: Playing in darkness is quite appropriate for Dowland's music :) - Dutch rock guitarist Jan Akkermann has a video on YouTube playing Dowland (I think) on a lute in a similar ambience.

Wow, thanks for posting! The lighting, the piece, and the sound of the guitar (smaller scale/gut strings/no nails) really pulled me in. Spellbinding.

A ten-year old thread resurfaces! I haven't seen this video since I recorded it. Nice to have a trip down memory lane, and the performance is not too bad.

No edition, just learned from a manuscript copy of the lute tablature. Learn to read lute tab in five minutes, and you'll never require editions ever again. My "Introduction To The Lute for Lute and Guitar Players" (Mel Bay publications) will guide you through the process of reading lute tab, but it also includes guitar tab, and, yes, this version of Lachrimae is included. Comes with sound files of my performances.

It's been some time since i read lute tab, but i did quite a bit during my time in school. I completely forgot i could even do that hahaha. Thank you! I just found it on imslp and going to give it a go.
