Weiss, S. L. - Ciaccona from Lute Sonata 14 - Duo

Post by Marcus Strand » Thu Oct 14, 2010 8:32 am

Hello all,

this is a solo piece which I've always believed to be a duo originally,
I haven't been able to find any evidence supporting that but to
me the structure in the original solo piece clearly suggests a duo
possibility with every melody round followed by an accompaniment
round where only the chord progression is played.

This was recorded at a concert at Malmö courthouse in 2009 with
mandolinist Olle Norén.

Enjoy!

Really, REALLY beautiful Marcus and Olle!
:bravo:
You two play perfectly together. The trills and dynamics are all exactly like breathing! Very sensitive and heavenly.

You must be playing your alto, right? Those rich bass notes...it's like an orchestra!

Thank you for sharing this,

Alan

very, very beautiful!!

I have heard this the first time at the Koblenz International Guitarfestival 2010 played by 3 young boys ages 13- 15 as a trio, director was Pof. Schillings.
This is a wonderful composition and you played it with great expression. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure you are right. I think the whole suite (in the London MS) is labelled as a duet, but the top part does not appear in the manuscript and is lost. Did you use a published arrangement or make your own - in which case would you post it in the PDFs section for others to play? :)

Thank you all for your kind words!

Interesting fact about the manuscript, that's worth looking into.
The arrangement is our own and is partly our own ideas and improvisations and partly other versions we've heard and borrowed from so unfortunately there's no score but I've recently started to notate all my arrangements so I'll let you know when I get to this duo!

Tarbaby: Many thanks, me and Olle have played together before but then in a bluegrass band where trills are not enormously abundant so we worked hard on those. Yes it's the alto guitar, it is very enjoyable to be able to make the base descend all the way down to the deepest dungeons of G minor!

I really like this duet, even more than the lute/flute duets of this piece I've heard!
