Carulli, Ferdinando - op.241/08 Waltz - Video

Post by Nick Cutroneo » Wed Nov 11, 2015 1:03 am

Here's my take on Carulli's Waltz in E minor. With so many repeats and sections, there's lots of opportunities to use different colors and dynamics, which I tried to incorporate in this performance. Enjoy!

Yes - very odd. It worked when I posted it yesterday.

Edit - it's work for me right now. I don't know what the issue is, but I had to refresh the page 2 times before the video popped up. Either way, the "YouTube" link at the bottom of my post is the hyperlink to the video on YouTube.

Thank you for showing lots of opportunities to use different colors and dynamics in this piece.
Sounds interesting.

Angela, I don't know what the issue could be, but I apologies for the issues. Sorry I don't have a better answer? Works fine on my end. You can visit my YouTube Channel: /nickcutroneo and find the video there - if you wish.

Zombie thread ...

Angela - coming in years later, I have sometimes experienced the problem you had when my browser's tracking protection was on. It often causes certain website elements not to display (e.g., product ratings especially on sites of web retailers) and videos not to play. Unfortunately I had to disable it on the page to get the video to play.

Nick - well done, very musical and expressive. Question for you - what score did you use? I have this piece in Noad 1 and on a handout from an instructor, copied from some anthology. They differ on one note, measure 20, 5th note. In Noad 1 (fourth edition) it is a B on the staff (open 2nd string) but on the handout, it's a bass B, 5th string 2nd fret. I've heard it done both ways, seen it printed both ways. Any thoughts? I think someone put up an old-looking score (labeled as original?) somewhere here on the forum, and ... it used the bass B.

kind regards,
Carl

Carl - thanks for watching, I'm glad you found the performance enjoyable.

I'm playing from a collection by Charles Duncan. Referring to the question of the B note in mm 20, the original (which is Carulli's method Op. 241 has the B in the bass. That note makes perfect sense as it's coming from a D, thus creating the G major arpeggio arrival in mm 21.

Thanks Nick -

Quick follow-up ... are you saying a bass B makes sense more than a treble B there? Measure 28 is the exact same sequence of notes, except there's a treble B in place of the bass B.

Also curious if you can elaborate more about the relevance of "coming from a D" and what you mean by G major "arpeggio arrival in mm 21" - since measure 21 doesn't seem to be an arpeggio. Thanks!

While measure 28 is the "same" it compositionally functions differently. mm 21 starts with a low G note in the "melody" whereas mm 29's melody has a D (on the 2nd string). So they are in fact not the same measures.

Looking at the notes in mm. 20, there's a low D, followed by B and concludes with a low G, these 3 notes create a G major arpeggio.
