[PDF] Anon. - Doulce Jouvencelle - 15th century Burgundian

Post by Tonyyyyy » Sun Apr 04, 2010 6:10 pm

A delicate and expressive piece written at the end of the Ars Nova (about 1420) in Burgundy

Suggestions for playing:
String 3 tuned to F sharp is slightly easier and smoother (it is playable in regular tuning too) ;capo on 2nd or 3rd fret gives a lighter sound
In order to make the piece more natural on guitar (while still aiming to play within the style of the period) some chords could be thickened and spread. A few notes could perhaps be missed out .
The timing is rather flexible - it is written here in 6/8 for convenience, but it seems to be simultaneously in 3's and 6's

Arrangement based on voice/lute version at medievallute.info
it can be heard at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB4CehJEK8A

For unfingered and tab versions, and midi file (which might help with the rather elusive rhythms ) - http://earlyguitar.info/forum/viewtopic ... 3054#p3054

Edit: updated with fingering 12 April 2010

Two thumbs up, Tonyyyyy, a real gem. I will be playing it all next week for my students.

We don't think about it, but, in 1420, this was considered "modern" music.

Cheers,

Kevin

Yes- cutting edge stuff - and still sounds fresh and new after all these centuries

Thank you

I should review the arrangement - maybe find places where it could be easier or more flowing.

Any suggestions welcome

I tried to combine the lute accompaniment and melody, which is quite a bit; maybe a few notes can be dropped without losing too much

Thank you for this arrangement, we will try it with a voice (as we cant read a lute score...)
