Notation reading question: Bach BWV 147

Post by Thierry » Sat Dec 15, 2018 1:53 pm

Hi,

I'm working on this arrangement of Jesu, joy of man's desiring and I'm trying to figure out what should be done with a specific measure.

It's a 9/8. The sheet is missing a bunch of rests... I can figure out most of them but I have a problem with this one:

What's going on in the bass line? I was assuming:

dotted quarter - eighth rest - eighth - eighth - eighth - eighth - eighth rest

Is this correct? It doesn't sound good in my ear... So I was wondering.

Thanks!

If it is 9/8, I would look at the top voice and see what is happening there. That all adds up correctly, so then I would look at how the bass line is registered with it.
I would read it dotted quarter followed by a rest, four eighth notes followed by a rest.

They're duplets - two notes in the time of three in the melody.

They should have an italic number 2 underneath the beam.

See measure 26 here, this being in 3/4.

Ha, I see... It's actually quite nice with duplets. Thanks Martin.

While being there... How would you notate properly this one (the 1/8 - 1/16 - 1/16)? Is it also an overall duplet feel?

Yes, that's another duplet. I don't think there's a better way of notating it other than to put a number 2 over the beam, to make it more obvious.

Most versions of this piece I've seen are scored in 3/4 time with the melody in triplets, which makes these things a bit easier to comprehend.
