Strads have a very even tone through the registers, but Paganini often preferred to play his Amatis and others and used a steel bow because as a soloist he wanted to stand apart with an uneven tone, rather like we have on guitars (he also played guitar!). Horses for courses.
Whatever gave you that impression?
I played the piece and mimicked all the violinist's movements on my Strad, but no matter what I did, I could not replicate the screeching.
Sounds like a Stradi-virus.
