A common greeting among the farming community around me is a gruff,

"Now then."

This translates as: Greetings my good fellow, I'm feeling very well and trust that you are in fine fettle yourself.

The standard reply, delivered with even more emphatic gruffness,

"Now then."

This however translates variously as: Indeed, and how nice it is to see you (though I shan't acknowledge that in any way that might be construed as less than "manly"),

or: Oh, it's you - I suppose that you want something that's going to cause some disturbance to my otherwise pleasant day.

yes it's nonsense. They've confused 'among the few' and 'the only'
