100 CDs from the US to UK - custom duties?

Post by Arash Ahmadi » Wed Jun 26, 2019 3:29 pm

Hi! I have to import 100 CDs from the US to UK. Does anyone know how much I'd have to pay for custom, duty or other taxes?

You can find out a lot here: https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty

You will have to pay VAT at 20% for sure. The "value" for VAT includes the cost of shipping.
Customs duties will kick in if the value is 135 uk pounds or more but usually this is a very small sum and may even be zero but the paperwork will likely cost money.

Thanks Simon! It sure seems like a lot of hassle...

Are they all copies of the same CD Arash?

Depending on your intentions - sales, demos? - an alternative might be to have a short run manufactured in the UK and simply bring in the case inserts.

Hi Mark! Yes they are. Well, I thought of making them all in the UK but it seems that it will cost me more than the cost in the US+shipping+custom and duty... But again that is too much of a hassle... I wonder why it is so expensive in the UK!

Can't answer that ... but I'm often puzzled at the lack of understanding of true value here.

It was just a thought.

I don't understand blind pariotism - I value our beautiful countryside and current liberties (such as they are) but my country has a long and disgusting history of oppression, manipulation, exploitation and destruction - it continues today - not much to be proud of.

re. P.M - sorry, not heard back yet Arash.
