Mankind's Greatest Inventions

Post by marvluse » Sat Jul 06, 2019 8:04 am

Now here is a random topic that I sometimes ponder: what have been the greatest inventions of mankind? After considerable thought I compiled my "top 5" list, according to me. It's completely subjective and personal, of course, even fanciful. But, here are mine, in no particular order...

(1) Beer and Scotch
(2) The Guitar
(3) Coffee and Tea
(4) The Printing Press
(5) The Pickup Truck

:D

What say you?

According to certain followers of that Darwin guy:

mankind

(for reinventing itself continuously, whether consciously or not)
Gretsch G9240 "Alligator" wood-body resonator converted to non-metal strings (China, 2018?)
Bolink baroque violin (Hilversum, 1982)
Formerly: Brian Cohen baroque violin (London, 1985), Nadegini modern violin (Paris, 1924)

Well, adopting this line of thought I would say that mankind was one of mankind's worst inventions.

Ain't that just a matter from which end of the measuring stick you look at things? ;)

This thread reminded me of a fortune cookie I got ages ago and which I could never forget"

I would have to agree with Stephen Fry:

The Cigarette Lighter - a way to make fire that you can put in your pocket and take anywhere in the world.

The greatest human invention was clothing, especially the overcoat, which allowed humans to leave Africa and inhabit every part of the world except Antarctica. The second greatest invention was the control of fire.

This is like trying to name a "Top 5 Beatles Recordings". Top 50 would be easier!

Yes but I can say one that would not be on the list: Lawnmower??? Unless you include the Roomba Lawnmower/Snowblower.

You have to add, "man's and/or woman's greated inventions, so far...", and I ask, what do each of you have in your pockets, or are typing on right now to instantly reach these readers from across the globe? miniature computer/communication device/high resolution camera/audio/video recording/tracking and navigation device. Any one of which could be at the top of the list.
All this time I thought I was making music; it was making me.

What's the greatest automotive invention? The electric starter, because it opened up driving to those unable or unwilling to hand crank an engine, which included most women and not a few men.
