The hot water bottle is my friend

Post by markodarko » Tue Jun 02, 2015 10:17 pm

I've found that after an intensive practice session, resting my right arm on a naked (no woolly jacket) HOT water bottle for an our in the evening whilst I'm relaxing is a great healer if my arm feels like its been through the mill that day.

That is all.

My reading at the time of my forearm pain a few months ago suggested a persisting confusion within medicine about using cold vs heat for the situation you describe. In the end I rationalised my own decisions based upon a recent review I read that suggested that, providing you haven't an acute injury, you should use whatever gives most comfort.

So although athletes climb into ice baths after heavy exercise my mother's folklore advice of a hot bath or hot water bottle also has its medical advocates. You pays your money (or reads your web pages) and makes your choice.

I saw some programme on iplayer where they compared muscle healing after exercise (running, in this case) between 3 groups. A control group, a group bathing in ice water, and a group bathing in hot water.

Turns out that both the hot or ice cold baths work nearly equally as well in healing. Far better than the control, with the ice water being marginally better, but only by around 2%. As long as the heat / cold is applied sufficiently long enough for it to penetrate to the muscles in question then both are good. :-)

Edit: oh, but heat / cold "sprays" do absolutely nothing at all. Waste of money.

I use a heating pad. I have several. The problem is that I can't find one in full body suit size.

I sometimes plunge my fretting hand into a bag of ice (in an ice chest) and/or selectively run an ice cube over any area of my hand that is griping(usually my thumb joint area.) If I'm serious, I'l follow this with warm water on my whole hand.

I also have a very nice electrical hand massage machine that I never seem to use.

It is my left forearm that gets sore after practicing. Since it is summer I may try ice. Thanks for the idea. My left arm has particularly not liked hauling 1800 lbs (NOT all at once) of compost to make raised beds and then coming in and practicing.

Its winter over here. Gloves of a morning to warm the hand up before playing has been the priority.

I seem to remember nakedness and wombs in that verse. Seems a bit bacchanalian for someone with a poorly arm. 8)
