Cannot play with left hand pinky anymore :(

Post by Luvaskot » Wed Feb 10, 2016 12:39 pm

Hi,

I currently found myself in real unfortunate condition. 2 weeks ago, when I was training I loaded so hard on my pinky and other day I had little pain on my finger. I did not realize that some thing was going wrong and I kept training. Then, my pinky went totaly numb. I stopped playing guitar then. I do not feel any numbness recently but when I try to play guitar my pinky starts hurting again. I talked with doctor, he said there not any nerve damage but he cannot estimate the recovery time, it could take long time. Is there anyone had same problem before?

There is no nerve, but do you check your tendon !!??
I am not a doctor and I don't know what is happen to you, but once I have a big problem with tendon.
In that case, most important thing is to put a splint at your finger immediately!!

I have had tendonitis on and off for 15 months but am not going to play sofa diagnosis. :)

There is a section of the Classical Guitar Classes subforum here that deals with Ergonomics and Posture. If you search there for numb finger you will turn up quite a few posts. But to be honest it's a bit like that chap in Three Men In A Boat - you could come away thinking you have all the maladies of the hand in one. I think you'd be wise to go to a physio. A few specialise in working with musicians but these might not be local to you. (If there is a music conservatoire or college or university with music performance degrees nearby then ask there as they'll almost certainly know of one.) Otherwise, via a local music society or music service enquiry, perhaps try a recommended local physio first.

I have experienced similar problems, except it is usually my ring finger, or pain up the wrist. I have never gotten any more satisfactory answer from the doctors I've seen that "take it easy for a while, and it will get better."
I would love to hear if you get some advice beyond "stop doing whatever you were doing."

It is best to see a specialized physiotherapist who works with musicians if possible. If you received any excercises for your tendon refrain from playing your instrument that day. Doing the exercises and playing could make things even worse. My physio recommended rubbing ice in a circular motion on the injured area for about 10 minutes 1-2 times a day. This is just my experience, I'm not a doctor and you should definitely get some professional help!

That sounds unfortunate. If you know its going to take you months to recover and you don't want to get too rusty, what I would do is still practice and only simulate pressing with the pinky without actually pressing down on the string. Of course you'll have to avoid the temptation of actually pressing down or that might compromise recovery time

Check/explore for sore points up through your arm, shoulder and neck. Work on them (apply pressure & hold and also massage).
Sometimes the pain is referred down your arm. I know that sounds surprising but this is what i experienced when i have little finger issues.

Also, don't panic - just accept that it is sore and let it recover. Have confidence it will get better (unless, you are unlucky enough to do some tendon damage which is doesn't sound like you have). Listen to music, do some studying but give it a break or very light work. Maybe do some right hand exercises and work on that - or on tone production.
When you return to playing work on releasing tension and relaxing the shoulder, arms and fingers. (Obviously i don't know your stengths and weaknesses so maybe this is a problem or not).

I found it hard to find a specialist who knew what to do.......plenty who said they did and took the money!

These injuries usually do recover if we are careful, maybe just a few weeks or so. When I had a painful index finger, I tried a couple of easyish pieces with the other three fingers (not wanting to mess up the regular pieces) and worked at some right hand techniques.

On coming back to regular practice you might make things easier for a while with lowered action , use of a capo and lower tension strings

I had an accident on my wood turning lathe a couple of years ago when my left hand little figure got caught in the spinning mechanism ripping it apart paring off the bone and cutting part way through the tendon. The plastic surgeons put me back together again, gave me exercises and physio and we're happy for me to use my guitar playing - very gently and carefully to start with - as additional therapy to help the finger heal. It took months, but I eventually got back to a good standard of playing. I was given a special kind of elastic putty to squeeze in my left hand. You could try using one of those spongy stress balls to work your left hand fingers. Also run the tip of your thumb (of the painful pinky hand) up and down the length of each finger of your hand in turn starting with the index and working through to your pinky. It feels strange but works all your finger joints and tendons in turn. In a nutshell, don't give up hope or trying. If I can do it after nearly ripping my finger off I am sure you can. :)
