US $..900 Asturias AST-100 (Robert England top) cedar 1989, Mississauga, Canada

Post by spronev » Mon Feb 19, 2018 3:13 pm

1989 Asturias AST-100 (Ramirez 1A copy) Classical Guitar
Solid Cedar Top
Double-Plate Brazilian Rosewood Back and Sides
Ebony Fingerboard
Bone Nut (52 mm) and Bone Saddle
650mm Scale Length

This is the top model from the Asturias AST line and bears the signature of Wataru Tsuji (the head luthier at Asturias). I bought this guitar a while ago and it needed a repair to the bridge. Instead of repairing the bridge, a luthier I have known for a long time now (Robert England) replaced the whole top and fingerboard with ones that he made. He did an amazing job at getting that done and this is the resulting guitar. The rosette was saved from the original guitar and used for the new top. The top is French-polished and the guitar sounds amazing. It sounds significantly better than the original guitar even though the original was already a very nice sounding guitar. The top has a Ramirez 1A bracing and is light and the sound lively as a result.

The condition of the guitar is very good as well with only a few marks on the top as well as a few on the rest of the guitar that I have shown in the pictures. There is also a bit of unevenness in the surface where the new fingerboard joins the neck but that does not present any problems at all and cannot be felt while playing. The neck is straight and the action is set at 2.75 mm on the 1st string and 3.75 mm on the 6th string at the 12th fret. The saddle sticks out about 4 mm on the treble side and about 5 mm on the bass side, so there is plenty of room to lower it further if desired.

The guitar has the typical Spanish sound of a Ramirez 1A with deep powerful bass and clear bell-like trebles that balance well with the bass. It sounds better than most original Ramirez 1A guitars I have played. If you are looking for a vintage Ramirez 1A and cannot afford to spend 5 to 10 thousand on one, this guitar is a great alternative at a small fraction of the price. And what you get on top of that is a guitar with a luthier-made top that is French-polished and Gotoh Premium tuners with aluminum rollers and bearings to make tuning as smooth as it gets. This is a combination which is hard to beat.

The guitar will come with a set of Augustine Classic Black nylon strings. These are among the most generic nylon strings available and allow the guitar to bring out its voice without coloring it. This guitar does not need carbon strings to sound great. It has more than enough volume and clarity with the most basic nylon strings.

For a sound sample of this exact guitar, please see the following video on youtube:

I will only accept PayPal for payment. I will ship to Canada and the Continental United States. The guitar will be shipped well packed with strings loosened in a hard shell case in good condition. I have bought and sold a long list of classical guitars over the years, so buy with confidence.

Shipping: $80 USD (Canada Post: 4-6 Business Days)

Nice guitar and performance. Can I ask how your luthier came to the decision to change the top. Was the original top inferior in some way or the finish too thick?

The original bridge was lifting and removing it from the top damaged the top, so the top had to be replaced. Replacing the top also required replacing the fretboard as the top extends under the fretboard. The original top was inferior in every way to the one one - much stiffer, with excess glue, and inferior piece of cedar as well, so the sound is now that of a luthier-made guitar and so is the playability (new fretboard, nut, and saddle).

I am quite surprised that this is still hanging round … All the essential bits are effectively handmade. Hope to see it go soon.

Thanks Svilen, it makes sense now. Yes, it sounds like a major upgrade with the bonus of having the brazilian rosewood body.

- this is one of ocassions when I feel sorry that I live so far, and I am not in a search for a guitar. I hope that this guitar will come to hands of a person who will apprecciate it's musical value and the beautiful story of creative work by Mr. England. If it were me, I would ask Svilen or Mr. England to make small label/sticker stating that the present top is created (yes, created) by Mr. England and the final result is, as we hear at rhe sound sample.
Antonio Picado, model 60, 2015, Cedar/IRW. Scale 640 mm.
Antonio Picado, model 62, 2018, Cedar/Madagascar Palosanto. Scale 640 mm. Doble Tapa.

Whilst there have been many guitars languishing in the ads section, Svilen always manages to sell beautiful guitars that people want at fantastic prices. I would have been happy to buy any one of his past guitars.

Well, people are often willing to spend three time this much for a factory-made guitar that will sound nowhere near this one. It requires one to have grown out of that to buy this one and play a guitar with luthier sound and playability. I guess it has to do with risk and reward. I was Robert's first customer about 8 years ago and since then have had 5 of his guitars over the years.
