DE €.4800, Kris Barnett "phi" cedar CITES FREE 2019, Atlanta, GA

Post by kris barnett » Tue Apr 02, 2019 12:17 pm

- Type: Classical Guitar
- Builder: Kris Barnett
- Year: 2019
- Scale: 650mm
- Nut Width: 52mm
- Soundboard: Cedar
- Bracing: phi
- Back / Sides: Solid Gabon Ebony
- Fingerboard: Ebony
- Condition: Just off the bench
- Price: €4800
- Viewing / Trial: Yes, 3 day return guarantee
- Location: Berlin, Germany or Atlanta, GA or Miami, FL
- Other Features: elevated fingerboard, Perona Tuning machines, 20th fret, removable armrest (if desired), brass inlays.

This guitar is fresh off of the bench. I have been trying to build myself an instrument for 15 years now but haven't been able to pull it off yet. This was supposed to be my personal instrument, but I have a new project underway and will need to finance it, thus I am selling this instrument.

I am quite happy with how it turned out. The sound is very open, has great responsiveness, and is very even string-to-string and note-to-note. Has plenty of volume, but retains a soulful character.

It comes with a 3 day, no questions asked return policy. Or, you can play the guitar in person at one of the locations mentioned above. The current build schedule is about 3 years so this is a good opportunity to get an instrument without the wait. Thanks for reading!!

Yep, this is a phi braced instrument.

I just remembered that the instrument I made for Siccas a while ago is almost identical to this, so you can have an idea of how it sounds.

Kris, I listened to the sister guitar sold by Siccas, wonderful tone, really. Clear and transparent, but warm at the same time. My question was what does phi mean? :D

My question was what does phi mean?
It refers to Kris’ own proprietary bracing pattern, a ”blend” of lattice and fan.

Haha, oops. Sorry about that. I thought you were asking if it is Phi bracing, not what is Phi bracing. The dimensions of the bracing pattern are based on the Golden Ratio (or phi), as are some of the frequencies of the instrument. Who knows if it actually makes a difference, but the first guitar that I built with this idea in mind was quite a nice instrument so I stuck with it and refined it over the years. Here is a photo of the bracing in case you are interested.

Thanks for the explanation. Andrea Tacchi's Coclea model bracing is also based on a sort of golden ratio formula.
