GB £.3000 Juan Hernandez 10-string cedar 2018, Edinburgh

Post by RobMacKillop » Sun Apr 21, 2019 3:16 pm

- Type / luthier: Classical/Juan Hernandez/Maestro Especial (top level)
- Year of construction:2018
- Scale length (mm): 664
- Nut width (mm):
- Top: Cedar
- Bracing (fan/lattice/other): Double-Top - Nomex
- Back / Sides: Cocobolo
- Finish: nitro
- Fingerboard / (bridge): ebony/rosewood
- Sound: wonderful!
- Condition: Very Good
- Price: £3,000
- Viewing / trial possible: yes
- Location (nearest city): Edinburgh

The current price from the luthier is 7,000 Euros for this stunning cedar/cocobolo Maestro Especial model from Juan Hernandez, but my fixed sale price is a mere £3,000. One month from now it will go on you-know-where for a starting price of £3,000.

They sent this to me twice. The first time it arrived with a crack in the base, close to where a strap button would be placed on an acoustic. I returned it, and they did a pro fix, and revarnished the area. Perfect. You might not notice it, but full disclosure is essential. There are also two small marks on an edge of the body, where I made contact with the music stand - see photo.

Reason For Sale: My wonderful daughter has been accepted to do a Masters Degree in Textile Design at the Royal College of Art, London, once her Degree is finished at Central Saint Martins, London. She needs money, and I'm more than happy to help her out! I've just sold my baroque lute as well. Really, I'm happy to do this for her. When she's rich and famous, she'll buy me ten more ;-)

What can I say about this guitar? I'd put it up against any Ramirez 10-string you'd care to offer, and they are over 10 Grand. Mine is a give-away at a mere £3,000 including original case (also made by the luthier), priced for a quick sale, and with the acknowledgement that there are not many buyers for a 10-string. Great playability too, low action. The seemingly long string length of 664 does not feel different to my 650 guitar - don't ask me why, as I couldn't answer. It just does. The extra string length really makes a difference to the resonance of the bass strings. Yepes' was also 664.

10-string capo included in price!!

Have a listen:

Darn it! Don't suppose you'd swop a well used George Lowden 1993 Brz Rosewood, Spruce fan fretted, Rodgers tuners!!! I hardly play 6 string guitar anymore. I wish I'd kept it in mint condition since I gather the asking price for those is over €9k!

I can no longer see the point of 6 string. 10 string Yepes tuning means both superior resonance and a little extra range & I guess if one gets tired of Yepes' system there's any number of different tuning systems that could be used instead - decacorde, "baroque" tuning, Russian tuning etc.

Your guitar is beautiful - I wish you luck with your sale & also to your daughter & her studies.

Thanks, Conall.

Gary - yes.

I'm left with two Camps guitars, the Amazon and Primer-A, which are more than enough. Plus I have my 19th-century Spanish Guitar, which is going nowhere.

I wish I could handle a 664 (damaged hands). This is a beautiful instrument. Congratulations to your daughter.

Indeed, bear. Beautifully made all round. And a real bargain, if I may say so :-)
