Is This Arthritis ? Do/did you have this pain ?

Post by MarkInLA » Sat Jan 12, 2019 12:05 am

Hi. I've been playing since the 1960s. I have medium sized hands/fingers. I have always played full size guitars.. Today I play a 650 Cordoba C10 . As of about a month and a half now I've had constant pain somewhere between my knuckle and next joint of my LH 4..There are a number of stretches in our repertoire which have been difficult for me, yet I've manged to make them over the many many years.
Welp, now at 71 I have this new problem. Yet I still play 2-4 hours every day. It's not enough pain to prohibit playing. There is no arthritis in my family.
Those who have/had this, please tell me your experience, exercises, remedies. There's no prob in other fingers...Thanks, Mark

Mark, I am not a doctor, nor play one on TV, but I do get an occasional excruciating pain in my left index finger at the joint closest to the fingernail when bending it. When I mentioned it to my doctor, along with some other spots, he said it was probably arthritis and to try tylenol arthritis before playing, as it is the least harmful for side effects. It does help somewhat. I also found that a product called Blue Emu works wonders on this particular knuckle. I mean immediate relief and flexibility. I massage it in and voila, no pain. Doesn't work as well on my other aches, but it might be worth a try. Good luck!

Hi, Mark.
+1 Blu Emu lotion. It is a wonder lotion.
If your pain comes with morning stiffness on your LH 4, it might be trigger finger. Advil works well for inflammation. There are finger-less gloves out there for arthritis or carpal tunnel. It helps your finger muscle rest without much movement and makes your hand warm to relax muscle. I never wore gloves when I'm sleeping, but it did another wonder to me wearing gloves while I'm in sleep. I wear this gloves always day and night when I don't play CG. Wish it isn't arthritis. Get well!
Ken

Osteoarthritis produces swollen joints and in some cases bony spurs called osteophytes. As I assume you don't have access to an x-ray machine all you can do is feel the affected joint to see if it feels larger than other joints or if there are bits sticking out. A swollen joint on my left index finger makes barrees difficult for me to perform cleanly as it prevents me pressing the rest of the finger far enough down. The discomfort of arthritis usually occurs only sporadically.

I have rheumatoid arthritis - the pain, when it flares up, is intense, constant and intolerable. Painkillers don't touch it. It wakes you up at night. You can't put your hands anywhere without them hurting.

Get a referral to a specialist from your GP, pronto - I'm on a maintenance dose (now) of methotrexate (after two years of full dosage) and haven't had a flare since 2013. I play two hours of CG most days, teach guitar and gig with a Glenn Miller-style Big Band and also as a soloist at weddings and stuff.

Thanks for all the advice..Joint does not feel larger than other. I'm hoping it's just a strained/sprained tendon/ligament.
DEREK, I too have a bad LH 1 from a fracture I caused myself in a stupid situ.,and thus have the same problem getting a satisfactory barre now.. M

I am a doctor; don't get your medical advice on the internet, especially not a guitar forum.

If you keep tylenol (paracetemol) in the house, stick with small quantities. In Europe it is usually sold in 12 tablet packs not the USA style 200+ tablet bottles. While at normal doses the side effects are probably ok and excellent for some pains, if someone accidentally or deliberately takes a massive overdose, it can be fatal.

Sorry if it sounded like I was giving medical advice. I was only telling what my doctor advised me, for my particular situation after an exam

I've been having trouble with arthritis for several years, now at age 57. Fortunately it hasn't affected my hands. Due to earlier joint injuries in life I'm beginning to have some trouble with osteoarthritis, a whole different ball of wax compared to rheumatoid which is an autoimmune disease. Have you ever had psoriasis? That can cause psoriatic arthritis later in life with pain and inflammation in the hands and feet IIRC.

I use 'Deep Blue Polyphenol Complex'. Pricey but it works the billy be damned. I have arthritis in my right ankle and when it flares up I can't walk without a cane or crutches. It comes in oral tablets, and topical gel - I use both - it's not over the counter, at least here, which is convenient. If you can't find it locally then Amazon has it...

I'd at least give it a go. Nothing to lose. Good luck!

Hi.
It's now Jan 18 and the pain has gone away !! I am very happy that it likely isn't arthritis after all ! I even have HT Savs back on. I suppose it was just a false alarm and only a sprain ! I hope those of you who have new finger pain, too find it isn't arthritis..
Thank you all for your advice and personal stories.... M, Los Angeles
