Here another recital from 1961:
Is the guitar a Spruce top? Very rare consider most of the videos seen so far was cedar top.

Amazing Segovia. The way he conducted his music is simply awesome

Yes, this was a Hauser, but not THE Hauser.

I have always found Segovia very hard to listen to. Odd phrasing, holding on to notes for no reason that I can discern, inappropriate accents and stresses and - for me - very little of his playing seems to embrace the style of the period of music he is performing.

It reminds me of that saying about "Errol Flynn playing Errol Flynn in" [insert the movie].

However, what isn't in dispute is the profile he gave the guitar and, from what people who heard him live report, an exceptional and unique tone.

Some things that interest me about these videos are:
1. I wonder why he chose to perform pieces that would now be considered intermediate level pieces. Did he just like the music or was it to reach a wider audience that wasn't necessarily experienced classical music listeners?....
Probably both answears are true. And also, most of the video we can see were made when he was an elderly, it is normal that he lost some of his virtuosity.
I saw a video with David Russell and he said that a big mistake that folks make is playing pieces in performance that are "impressive" (as in pieces that are good for exams) rather than playing pieces that are pleasing to an audience but lower in grade. He said that most folks would be better off performing pieces a few grades below where they are at.
Yes I go along with that view.

I doubt if David had internationally renowned concert artists in mid when he said that...
