Lute Isabelino e - b a y problem with G4-string

Post by Luteagent » Fri Jan 18, 2019 2:36 pm

My Lute Isabelino, which I bought on e - b a y last week has finally arrived, but there ist a problem with it:

I can`t fix the G4 String because the peg of the G4 string does`nt hold tight.

I think this is not ok and will aks the seller for a massive reduction or send it back to him.

Or are there other solutions?

Try chalk on the areas of the peg that contact the peg wall. If that doesn't solve it then it could be a peg that has been badly fit. Peg paste for sticking pegs, chalk for pegs that slip.

This is not a major issue, and if you like the instrument and the price was right, keep it!
I think it would be unfair to expect a "major reduction" in the price of the instrument.

Learning how to service the pegs is part and parcel of playing a lute. If you know any violin/viol/cello player they might be able to give you are quick intro. I wouldn't consider it a major issue. It might have been nice if the seller mentioned it, but it is also a fair assumption that anyone buying any instrument with pegs will have some knowledge about how they work.

Many thanks for your advices!
I have spoken with the seller now and he just told me, that I have to fix the problem with peg paste.
Fortunately I have a Lutespecialist near my home, and I will visit him tomorrow, so that he can solve the problem with the pegs.

While I play my new lute for six weeks now, a new problem with the G4-string has appeared.
The G4-string has broken two times in six weeks now, although I don´t play more than 15 minutes per day.
Is that normal?

What strings are you using and where in the string have the breaks occurred?

I use Pyramid strings for lute. The breaks occurred in the lower part of the string.
