Women composers for solo guitar, my database

Post by HeikeMatthiesen » Thu Mar 07, 2019 11:38 am

Dear all,
since I am working as board member for the Archiv Frau und Musik, one of the worldwide biggest archives for women composers, I started to compile a list of all women composers for classical guitar I could find.
It is getting close to 700 now!!!
Please tell me if there are names missing, or if you find some errors....

The list is constantly updated, next step will be to add more wikipedia and playlists!
Enjoy discovering:

Phyllis Tate
1911-1987
A Sad Humouresque (1970)
Seascape (1976) (this one is on my YT channel, it is quite easy and effective)

Many titles by Maria Linnemann are missing.

And, despite the visual spelling of his name, CAROL van Feggelen was a Dutchman who emigrated to Canada decades ago. :)

@David Norton, thanks, there I had not checked wikipedia etc yet, thanks for that correction! I carefully checked all Asian names, but did not expect "Carol" to be a men's name...
And Maria I will add, I play a lot of music by her!
Funfact: On many covers of her books there are weird youth photos of me, I was student of Heinz Teuchert, so he asked me to model for the Ricordi guitar editions!

Nice list, thanks for sharing.
David is a living Encyclopedia.

Some nice Brazilian composers that composed for guitar I couldn't find in your list:
Sílvia de Lucca
Esther Scliar
Vania Dantas Leite
Thais Montanari
Mariza Resende
(I dind't look for them thoroughly, I might have missed some).

Elizabeth Lutyens also wrote a guitar orchestra piece, though I can't think of the name of it right now.

I'm hugely impressed that you have catalogued so many, Heike. 700! I'm embarrassed to say I would have thought less than 100. I assume you are in contact with my good friend, Jelma van Amersfoort?

Now I will try to listen to their works...I might be gone some time!

Also, The Dying of the Sun, for guitar, Op. 73 (1969). Am tracking down the ensemble - I played in it, its an eskimo themed thing.

Can't see for looking:
Anerca, for speaker, 10 guitars and percussion, Op. 77 (1970) – on Eskimo poetry

Think you'll find both were written for Gilbert Biberian.

Talking of Elizabeth Lutyens, I highly recommend her biography. Quite a life she had.

I will add the Lutyens pieces in the next lists which will be not solo! @Rob @Stephen
And I will check the Brazilians right now!! (Thanks @Luis!)

You all are a wonderful help. I am right now trying to fill more and more of the empty fields with websites etc... it is really a work in progress.
