Carcassi, Matteo - op.60/02 Etude - Video

Post by David Norton » Sun Mar 10, 2019 3:37 pm

A quick video mostly done to give a sample of my [new to me] 1988 Jose Ramirez 1a "da camara" guitar.

Nicely played on your new (old) guitar!

I love the sound. What kind of strings are on it in the video?

Nice playing, David. I've long been interested in the Da Camera, but have never played one or even heard one in the flesh. What can you tell us about the internal construction and its effect on the sound?

Hi David,
Is this the Ramirez with the inner fan/skirt? I have a 1984 1a which I haven't played for years. Will unearth and do a recording! Big guitar for small hands!

@Norbert: strings are Jose Ramirez medium tension (blue package). I've used these strings for several years now, and it seemed very logical to mount up a set on this guitar.

@Rob: last weekend at the Utah CG Festival, a fellow who worked at "The Rosewood Guitar" in Seattle prior to moving to Utah this year said "I've played a dozen or more Ramirez 1a's at the store, this one is the loudest and clearest I have ever heard. Amazing!". I've been playing it exclusively the past month, and I find my other instruments now seem a bit aenemic in comparison. Tomorrow I shall use it perform the Vivaldi D-major R93 with a string trio, and at rehearsal the other night it held its own unamplified quite well.

@Desparado: yes, it has the inner --- "something". Mounted along both sides, midway between top and back and running all the way around, extending about halfway into the body cavity. I call it a "shelf", but yes we mean the same thing. A horizontal tornavoz is as good a descriptor as any.

BTW, this is the 650mm model, it has the red "86" stamp on the label which designates it as such. Age and loss of finger elasticity preclude any 660/664 mm expeditions!
