I'm curious about people's thoughts on interpretation in the absence of score markings in "modern" music (modern in this case meaning 20-21st century work as a whole). I've been looking at some of Franco Margola's pieces and they are almost entirely devoid of any indications other than an initial tempo and the occasional crescendo and diminuedo. I certainly add my on take, but I'm curious if this kind of score should be looked at as an open invitation or is it intended to be performed in more of a flat manner.
Thanks
Steve
