Guitar and electronica - know any pieces?

Post by Kristian Nøhr » Tue Jul 24, 2012 6:49 am

I am working on a new composition, which involves classical guitar and electronic sounds. I use Cubase 5 together with Native Instruments kontakt 5....so eventually I will end up with an audio mixdown from Cubase to accompany my guitar. Imagine it like guitar+sfx.

I would love to have some inspiration, but I have failed to look up other similar compositions of that kind.

So far I've found a couple of electro-house/techno pieces with a few nylon arpeggios in it, but that not what I want....

Do any of you guys know some contemporary composers/pieces involving guitar and SFX from computer...??

Take care
Kristian

Let's see...

Thea Musgrave: Soliloquy, for guitar and tape
Mario Davidovsky: Synchronisms #10, for guitar and tape
Alden Jenks: The Candle a Saint, for guitar, reader, and tape
Ronald Bruce Smith: Five Pieces for Guitar and Live Electronics, (Max/MSP)
Larry Polansky: freeHorn, (for any number of instruments and live electronics; in just intonation (or not))
Sam Adams: Tension Studies #1 and #2, for guitar, percussion, and live electronics (Max/MSP)

There're dozens more, but these are a good starting point. Of course there are also pieces for guitar and delay or pre-recorded guitars, but that's not exactly what you're looking for, methinks.

This has come up before viewtopic.php?f=4&t=42190 .

Strictly speaking your work is more like guitar and tape in that there is no real time manipulation of the guitar sound, the electronic sounds are prerecorded.

The first one would have been better if he didn't attempt tremolo. Also such a waste to have a Godin plugged into a VG99 and just use a couple of presets.

Auburn by Michel van der Aa. It's not my favorite work of his, but it's worth checking out.
I saw the performance of his chamber opera "One" (for soprano, soundtrack and film) on Zagreb biennale - I think it was in 2001 or 2003 - and it was fantastic.

Slide for guitar and electronics by Panayiotis Kokoras is also very interesting.

A musician that springs to mind is Philippe Emmanuel Gueble, he mixes guitar and ambient music. I know nothing about him, just heard him on the radio and got a podcast mix with some of his music on it.
The only thing I can now find is this, which has some free samples

You must check out 'Hinchinbrook Riffs' by Nigel Westlake for guitar and delay. Incredible piece. Ive performed it a few times and always leaves audience hypnotized. The best version to listen to is Slava Grigoryans CD of all Westlake pieces.

Oh thanks - great suggestions :)

I am still working on the piece - currently around 15 min - its based on a story about a closed steel mill in my town - Im performing it this fall in an exhibision related to the old factory...

Right now its an audio track full of industrial sound, - and a guitarvoice based on arpeggios with delay - so thats a bit like Westlake......

Should be finished within a month or so.....but omg this electronic world is endless, there are SO many choices!

Hej Kristian!

Yes, sheerpluck is a great site!
I discovered it stumbling over Seth Josel´s performance of Karlheinz Essl´s Sequitur VIII. (on YT)

Greeting, Güero.
