D01 Classical guitar lesson 02

Post by Jean-François Delcamp » Mon Sep 30, 2013 4:00 pm

Hello everyone,
Please start by downloading the latest version of volume D01.
If you are new to the course, please read this message to familiarize yourself with the conditions for participating in the lessons. You should also read the first message in lesson 1, where you will find advice on how to make the most of your study time and on the methods of practising that I recommend.

First we will study some technical exercises from volume D01.
Page 54: C major scale. Be sure to damp the notes properly in the descending passages. To damp the notes in the descending passages: lean the fingers of the left hand against the vibrating strings. Work on controlling the volume by playing crescendo and decrescendo.

Page 59: In the following exercises, you will work on getting a smooth join between notes, that is to say that you will end one or more notes at the exact moment that you start the following note (or notes). Exercises 17 to 20 are for the fingers of the right hand. The sign (x) indicates that the right hand finger is placed on the string.
Exercise 21 is for the left hand: lean the left hand finger to damp the adjacent string at the same time as you start the new note.

D01 p59 n17

D01 p59 n18

D01 p59 n19

D01 p59 n20

D01 p59 n21

Finally, we'll look at six simple tunes, pages 11 to 15
Anonymous: Doucement, doucement

Anonymous: Jig

Anonymous: London's burning, canon

Anonymous: Une souris verte

Anonymous: J'ai du bon tabac

Anonymous: La tête bizarde

Anonymous: Frère Jacques, canon

I ask you first to work on all these exercises and tunes for a week and then to upload your recordings of:
The C major scale
Exercise No. 20
Une souris verte
J'ai du bon tabac

Good luck!

I thank Geoff (GeoffB), Dan (dng) and flameproof, who have helped in the translation of my lessons into English.

Jean-François

Yikes, I have been practicing "Il est ne le divin enfant" (aka La Tete Bizarde) all week thinking it was the exam qualification request.
Not sure whether I was dreaming on Tuesday night or whether there has been an edit to the first post
Guess I'll be start focussing on the shorter tunes over the Week-end,
then again I'll be well prepared for next Xmas ;-)

Don't feel bad, Casper, I just realized this week how the lessons work, never noticing the little note at the lesson intro bottom. Maybe now we can put the focus on the work where it belongs first. In case you didn't notice, the release dates for the lessons are located here: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=54023 . Lots more coming.

Hi All,

Ben: Nice job on the videos! Also thanks for the link for the release dates. It's nice to know we have more time with lesson 02 as I am finding the exercises very challenging!

As far as the exercises go, I find it extremely challenging to pluck some strings while keeping the other fingers on the strings to keep them damped! I am finding exercises 18 and 19 most difficult of all because of this. I think I found a trick to help me get there: instead of playing strings in unison (as written in exercise 18 for example) at first, I play them right after each other until my hand gets used to it.

For example:
  • in #18, b) pluck the p then the a while damping with the i and m then pluck the i then the m while damping with the p and a
  • in #18, c) pluck the p then the m while damping with the i and a then pluck the i then the a while damping with the p and m
Of course this is only at first until I'm able to play them the way they're supposed to be played! :D

I'm sure these exercises will pay off in the end.. Is anyone else find this as challenging as I am? Any other suggestions that might help?

Thanks,

Dave

Hello everyone
Do not be discouraged, everyone has been doing a good job. Just think that students who are more advanced, they first had to do what you are doing now.
Ben: You watch your thumb of the left hand.

Thanks, David. I'm also having trouble with lesson 2. I'm not only having difficulty making my middle and ring finger of my right hand move independently but also the tune J'Ai Du Bon Tabac is driving me nuts, I just can't seem to get it down. I don't know why that is, but I must have practiced it a million times, still no go. I thought maybe it was only me that was having problems.
