All Segovia's recordings on record .... a list?

Post by glassynails » Sat Jan 17, 2015 1:53 pm

I'm wondering if there's a list somewhere of all the recordings that Segovia EVER made. For example, I always thought there were only 2 recordings of Granada that he did, but I searched YT today and found what I think is a 3rd recording made in 1944.

Does anyone know hoe many recordings of Granada he made? Has anyone ever heard his recording of Mallorca? I'd love to hear that!
"GLASSYNAILS" on Youtoob for my "no edit" - "no fakery" audio recordings. Just me, my Alhambra 7p spruce, and an Olympus ls-10 portable recorder.

Now that's what I call a thorough response...well done David. A resource for Segoviaphiles everywhere.

Excellent work! Now to pair all this information up with those, now iconic and unforgettable, album covers! :D

Of course, this list was one I had compiled a while ago. There are some live concert recordings (CD and video) which I didn't list here, but this is all the material released on disc in his lifetime.

my favorite album cover belonged to a Segovia recording that is actually missing from David's excellent list. It was called "the Genius of Andres Segovia: a Bach Recital" and it was on the Everest label. It was my favorite because on the back was a beautiful description by a poet friend of Segovia's expressing what the maestro's music meant to him. My records are thousands of miles away from me so i can't check it, but it began: "My Dear and incomparable Andres" and ended "Right now I suffer excruciatingly but know that the first chord you strike will heal me"...or something like that. I knew what he meant and have always associated Segovia's playing with those beautiful words somehow. If one of you has that album and wouldn't mind writing out the poet's lament/dedication, i would love to remember how it went.

Everest Records was a reissuer, not original pressings. The contents of that LP are nearly identical to this one, minus the Fugue 1001:

ANDRES SEGOVIA PLAYS BACH
Allegro ALL 750 / Fidelity FID 2160 / Saga 2148
Recorded in USA 1947. Issued in London 1964 (ALL 750). Reissued 1975 (FID 2160)
Suite BWV 1012: Gavotte
Partita BWV 1004: Chaconne
Sonata BWV 1001: Fugue
Partita BWV 1006: Gavotte
Prelude BWV 999
Suite BWV 1009: Courante
Suite BWV 996: Sarabande, Courante

Thanks for clearing that up David, I didn't realize that. I had a number of Segovia recordings of Bach over the years, but the versions were different from the ones on the Everest LP, so I assumed it was an original.

Let me preface this with the fact that I'm sorry to drag up a fairly old thread. But I did have a question about your sources for this list, David_Norton! I know you said you'd compiled it yourself a while back.

I'm doing research on Segovia (because of course) and this is a fantastic list, but I need a way to cite it for some research I'm doing. I had been referencing a discography from Graham Wade's book, Segovia: A Celebration of the Man and his Music, but your list differs from that discography. Do you have suggestions for discographies from other authors?

Not necessarily true if David is using "British" English in ye olde US of A. What he said was:

Which suggests someone else did it as his behest.

(First time I have used the word behest in decades! )

OK, clarification of authorship: I found the rough-cut of this list online in 2002, when I was working on the Segovia Montevideo project. I do not recall what website or forum I got it from. That was the majority of it. My own "contribution" was adding some recording dates, correcting a few spellings, crediting Ponce where appropriate for the Scarlatti/Weiss tracks, and some other unimportant editorial work. I kept this list for my own use, but when the topic came up, I copied it here as a reply to the OP question.

Wade's book reflects the UK releases, mine is for the USA releases. There were some slight differences.

For academic citations, I would stick with referencing Wade's list. He's a recognized Segovia author and authority with academic credibility.

Uiii, so much of Segovia music I still didn't heard. Problem is just that I do not own a gramophone any longer :) I own a set of Segovia cd:s about 9 or 8 of them and any other cd I see in online stores seems to be pretty much just a recompilation of what is already on those :(. Thanks for the list. Cool thread.

Here's my favorite Segovia recording, Decca DL 8022. Of all the Albeniz and Granados recordings Segovia did over the years, I think I prefer the ones on this record. Luckily, they're available on YouTube now.

holy moly, i searched at allmusic and they list an awful lot of albums (i'd guess well over 100). no doubt many are reissues or various compilations, but still.
